Shawn had to work for it. The families grew up on the same estate, Jess was school friends with his sister, and he asked her out more than once before she finally said yes. By the time their son Harry was old enough to understand what a wedding day meant, they were having one at Peckforton Castle.
The morning of the wedding, Jess woke up with a horrible sickness bug. NHS 111 advised her to postpone. She got married anyway.
Between rain showers that afternoon, we slipped out into the castle grounds and got some of the most atmospheric portraits I've taken at this venue. The cloud cover, the wet stonework, the low light sitting just above the battlements: sometimes the weather hands you something a sunny afternoon never could. Later, Shawn cut the wedding cake with an actual sword.

Shooting at Peckforton Castle: the spots worth knowing about
Peckforton Castle is one of those venues where the location does half the work. I say that as someone who has photographed it across different seasons, in glorious sunshine and in proper Cheshire rain, for intimate ceremonies and full evening celebrations. It never runs out of things to offer a camera.
The drive and the Gatehouse Lodge
The long sweeping approach through the gatehouse lodge is the first thing that hits you when you arrive at Peckforton Castle, and it's one of the most underused photography spots at the venue. There's something about that drive, the narrowing as you come under the arch, the stone of the gatehouse framing everything behind it, that creates images with real depth and a genuine sense of arrival. Early in the morning, before guests fill the grounds, it's particularly special.
The Retreat
If you're getting ready at the castle, The Retreat is the bridal suite and it's beautifully designed with a wedding morning in mind. Some of the quietest and most genuine photographs from a Peckforton Castle wedding happen here, before the ceremony begins and before anyone is performing for anyone else.
The castle exterior
The red sandstone walls and towers of the castle itself are extraordinary. This isn't a castle-themed venue or a Victorian folly pretending to be something it isn't. Peckforton is Grade I listed and genuinely medieval in character, and that texture comes through in photographs in a way that you simply can't manufacture. At certain times of day, particularly late afternoon when the light catches the stonework at an angle, the whole exterior takes on a warmth that looks almost painted.
The grounds
The grounds give us room to move, which I always appreciate. When Jess and Shawn got married here, we slipped out into the grounds and got some of the most atmospheric portraits I've taken at this venue. The cloud cover, the wet stone, the battlements: they came back with images that neither of them would trade for sunshine. In good weather, the grounds give you long natural perspectives with the castle as your backdrop. In bad weather, they give you something entirely different and, honestly, equally compelling.
The Great Hall and interior spaces
Inside, Peckforton Castle has the kind of interiors that photograph themselves. Vaulted ceilings, tiled floors, roaring open fires, heavy stone walls: every room feels like it has been here for centuries, because it has. The Great Hall is the centrepiece, but the Wine Cellar wedding reception space has its own atmosphere entirely. Candlelit dining rooms, oak-panelled spaces, warm amber light against ancient stone: wherever the ceremony or reception is, I'll find the angles that work.

What are the best photo spots at Peckforton Castle?
Several. The long sweeping drive through the gatehouse is one of my favourites and is often overlooked. The castle exterior, that Grade I listed red sandstone, photographs beautifully at different angles and in different light throughout the day. The grounds give room for longer couple portraits with the castle as your backdrop. Inside, the Great Hall, the vaulted dining rooms, and the Wine Cellar each have their own mood. What happens if the weather is bad on our wedding day?
Honestly, some of my favourite images from Peckforton Castle have come from exactly that. Jess and Shawn's wedding day brought proper rain in the afternoon. We slipped out between showers and got portraits in the castle grounds that neither of them would trade for sunshine. The low light, the wet stonework, the cloud sitting just above the battlements: the castle has a quality that actually benefits from moody weather. It photographs differently depending on the conditions, and that's a good thing. Whatever the day brings, we'll make the most of it. Peckforton Castle doesn't need a blue sky to look extraordinary.
